  1. Before you begin any drywall repair, clean the area using a damp sponge.
  2. Avoid starting until you have all your tools and materials ready and in place.
  3. To prevent mess and make future cleanup easier, lay a plastic drop cloth on the floor.
  4. Don’t feel like you have to do it all yourself. Ask a friend or family member to help you out.
  5. When applying compound, 3-4 light coats is ideal.
  6. Instead of sanding after every coat, wait to sand until after your final coat.
  7. During the sanding process, wearing goggles and a mask is recommended.
  8. Keep your tools and materials out of sight and reach of children.
  9. Avoid letting the project drag on over a long period of time. Map it out step by step and have a set time frame that you would like to complete the project in.
  10. Know when you are in over your head. If problem area is proving to be too much, consulting a professional may be your best option.
