Hand Sewing Needles Chart

Needle Sizes Uses
Sharp Sharp Needles 1-10 Suitable for woven fabrics; the stitch is even and the sharp point help prevent gathering of the fabric.
Between Between Needles 1-12 A short needle designed for fine stitches in heavy or multiple layers of fabric. This needle is used for quilting.
Milliner Milliner Needles 3-12 A long needle most often used in basting applications.
Crewel Crewel Needles 1-10 This needle is designed for embroidery and features a sharp point and a long eye to accommodate embroidery threads.
Chenille Chenille Needles 13-26 An embroidery needle designed for use with yarns.
Tapestry Tapestry Needles 13-26 The appropriate choice for needlepoint; a heavier needle with a rounded tip.
Cotton Darner Cotton Darner 1-9 This needle is designed for darning fine fabrics.
Yarn Darner Yarn Darner 14-18 A fairly large needle used for darning with yarns.
Glover Glover 3-8 This needle has a sharp wedge-like tip designed for puncturing heavy materials such as leather and vinyl.
Curved Curved Needles 1.5”-3” This needle is used where a straight needle would be awkward – often in heavy applications such as rug-making and upholstery.
Sailmaker’s Sailmaker's 14-17 A needle with a sharp triangular point, designed to pierce canvas or other heavy materials.
Beading Beading Needles 10 & 12 A very fine needle used for beading applications. Also useful for attaching sequins to fabric.
